Since 1970, 73% of credit unions have died. There were 23,687 credit unions in 1970 and only about 6,000 remaining in 2016. Credit unions continue to disappear at a rate of 3% per year.

 

Big credit unions are getting bigger and small credit unions are merging. Will this trend continue until there is just one goliath credit union? Or worse yet, will the trend continue until there are zero credit unions? Probably not.
